Description:

Outstanding Teaching and Learning is the most important principle we have at LSA and drives everything we aim to achieve. A focus on staff development and high levels of individual accountability for the quality of teaching, feedback and assessment is central to our success. The Assistant Principal for Teaching and Learning will lead this agenda across the whole school, setting the vision, developing staff, monitoring quality, and building the systems and culture that enable every teacher to do their best work.


This role drives teaching and learning across LSA ensuring planning, delivery and assessment meets the ambition of the institution. You will manage the development of teaching practice for all of our teachers here at LSA, monitor the quality of classroom delivery and planning, and oversee the programme of support for Early Career Teachers.


This is an exciting role which is at the heart of what we do at LSA. The Assistant Principal will be expected to oversee the whole school CPD process for all staff, work with the Senior Leadership Team and department heads to quality assure classroom practice and planning documents.


The post would suit someone with senior leadership experience, or a strong middle leader ready to take the next step into whole-school leadership.


The successful candidate will have the ability to hit the ground running, quickly win hearts and minds of colleagues by acting decisively and with empathy, to be comfortable working with whole school systems and technology, and be someone who consistently looks for ways to make improvements in standards.


LINE MANAGEMENT

The Assistant Principal for Teaching and Learning is a full member of the Senior Leadership Team. The role holds line management responsibility for key whole school areas linked to teaching, learning, inclusion, and student achievement. Areas of oversight include:

  • Teaching and Learning Coach team, including management of two TLR holders
  • SEND provision, including line management of the SENDCo
  • English and Maths departments, including line management of the Heads of Department for English and Maths

As part of the ongoing development of the Senior Leadership Team structure, the final leadership portfolio will be aligned to the successful candidate’s experience, strengths, and the strategic priorities of the school

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Setting the vision for teaching and learning at LSA

  • Establish and communicate a clear, ambitious vision for teaching and learning at LSA.
  • Develop and embed teaching and learning principles that define excellent planning and classroom delivery.
  • Act as the school’s leading advocate for high-quality, reflective and evidence-informed teaching practice.
  • Lead on teaching and learning aspects of the School Development Plan.

Monitoring the quality of Teaching & Learning

  • Conduct regular learning walks, provide timely, constructive feedback to staff and leading to informed interventions.
  • Lead quality assurance of curriculum planning, including teaching and learning deep dives across departments.
  • Conduct student voice activities to understand the quality and consistency of teaching and learning.
  • Lead and support the Teaching and Learning Coach team in observation, coaching and improvement work.

Leading SEND and inclusive teaching

  • Line manage the SENDCo, supporting them to maintain effective systems for EHCP reviews, reasonable adjustments and access arrangements.
  • Ensure SEND practice is closely connected to high-quality, adaptive teaching and classroom delivery.
  • Ensure SEND information is clear, accessible and used well by teachers to inform planning and delivery.
  • Monitor the experience, progress and outcomes of students with SEND, ensuring barriers to learning are identified and addressed.

Overseeing English and Maths

  • Line manage the Heads of English and Maths, supporting them to set priorities, monitor and improve outcomes
  • Ensure English and Maths provision is well planned, well taught and responsive to student need.
  • Support departments to use assessment, attendance and progress data effectively.
  • Ensure English and Maths are well integrated into the wider student experience at LSA.

Overseeing whole school CPD

  • Designing the full programme of weekly CPD electives for all teachers and specialist staff
  • Working with colleagues to develop CPD electives, and to quality assure them
  • Managing the school CPD budget and quality assuring external CPD provision
  • Overseeing CPD aspects of our INSET programme

Leading on teacher development

  • Running our Industry Converter Programme for industry professionals retraining as teachers
  • Coaching teachers, and leading our small team of coaches
  • Acting as the induction tutor and overseeing the programme of professional studies for Early Career Teachers
  • Overseeing the experience of trainee teachers such as PGCE placement students

Teaching

  • Teach a reduced timetable in any relevant subject in English (including EPQ), Maths or Film and TV.
  • Model excellent teaching in their own practice.
  • Maintain a strong connection to the student experience and day-to-day classroom life at LSA.

Wider School Leadership

  • Work with other Assistant Principals to analyse data, outcomes and quality assurance findings.
  • Contribute to whole-school self-evaluation, improvement planning and strategic decision-making.
  • Lead on student induction, ensuring a strong and purposeful start for all new students.
  • Organise and lead parent and carer events as required.
  • Work with the pastoral team to develop and quality assure the pastoral curriculum.
  • Lead on agreed aspects of the School Development Plan beyond the teaching and learning brief.
  • Be an active, constructive and visible member of the Senior Leadership Team.
