About the Role

Become part of a mission-driven digital team helping to build secure, resilient services used by millions across the UK. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), in partnership with Inspire People, are recruiting experienced manual software testers with experience testing web-based user interfaces and APIs, with experience of testing tools such as Bruno and Xray. Based in Swansea with hybrid working, including a minimum 60% office-based over a month, this role offers a salary of £39,163 plus c.29% employer pension contribution plus excellent Civil Service benefits.

As a Test Engineer, you will create solutions that improve the efficiency and effectiveness of testing processes. You will apply established engineering standards to design, develop and execute technical tests, helping to provide a high-quality and reliable testing service across both modern and legacy systems.

Working within Scrum teams, you will verify and validate code using appropriate tools and methodologies, supporting delivery teams to complete tasks and achieve a clear definition of done.

As a Test Engineer you will:

  • Determine test scope and estimate the effort required.
  • Use technical tooling and engineering approaches to design and execute tests.
  • Test web-based user interfaces and APIs.
  • Develop reports, record outcomes and support the resolution of defects.
  • Contribute to and follow engineering practices and standards.
  • Support Scrum teams in delivering high-quality, reliable digital services.

Essential skills for the Test Engineer include:

  • You will be comfortable reading and writing stories in the Gherkin specification language.
  • You will have real experience of using test tooling to assist you in testing both web-based user interfaces and APIs.
  • You will proactively look to implement Continuous Testing principles to speed up the feedback cycle for all elements of quality, such as security and accessibility.
  • You will have experience as a Test Analyst or Test Engineer and be able to work across multiple delivery squads.
  • You will be able to have difficult conversations when your testing has identified defects.
  • You will actively seek and consider the input of people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
  • You will collaborate with others to share information, resources and support.
