Software Engineer

We’re recruiting an experienced Software Engineer for a role combining hands-on development with responsibility for project delivery. You’ll build and improve web applications and SaaS products, make decisions about their technical design, and coordinate work involving other developers.

The role suits someone with strong backend skills who can contribute across the full stack. You’ll work closely with colleagues and customers to understand problems, turn ideas into practical solutions and support applications once they’re live.

Working within a small engineering team, you’ll have a varied remit and meaningful input into how projects are approached. Alongside writing code, you’ll organise work, guide less experienced engineers and help establish priorities.

What you’ll do

• Lead delivery: Take responsibility for the engineering work needed to move projects from agreed requirements to release, coordinating contributions from multiple developers.
• Organise projects: Break requirements into tasks, estimate effort, allocate work and manage dependencies so the team can deliver effectively.
• Develop across the stack: Build and extend web applications and SaaS platforms, including backend services, frontend features, third-party API connections and enhancements to existing platforms.
• Improve live software: Diagnose issues and strengthen application reliability, speed and maintainability as usage and requirements evolve.
• Translate user needs: Work with colleagues who manage customer relationships to clarify requirements and develop appropriate technical solutions.
• Contribute to customer conversations: Help explore briefs, explain technical options and present progress to people with varying levels of technical knowledge.
• Support other engineers: Provide practical guidance, constructive feedback and mentoring to junior developers.
• Evaluate new approaches: Keep your knowledge current and assess technologies that could improve existing products or support future development.
• Contribute flexibly: Take on related responsibilities across the team as project needs and priorities change.

What you’ll bring

Experience and delivery

• At least five years of professional software engineering experience, covering full-stack development with particular depth in backend engineering.
• Evidence of taking responsibility for applications running in production.
• Experience delivering projects with several engineers, including planning tasks, setting priorities, delegating work and coordinating progress.
• Experience mentoring junior developers and supporting their professional development.
• Confidence working in an agile environment where requirements and priorities can evolve.

Technical skills

• Strong server-side programming skills in Python or a comparable backend language.
• Practical experience with modern frontend frameworks such as React, Next.js or Vue, or equivalent technologies.
• Experience developing and scaling web applications and SaaS products.
• The ability to build and maintain custom API integrations and extend existing platforms.
• Strong knowledge of cloud infrastructure, with experience using providers such as AWS, Google Cloud Platform or DigitalOcean.
• A solid understanding of deployment pipelines, continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD).
• The ability to assess and improve the performance, reliability and long-term maintainability of production software.

Communication and collaboration

• The ability to explain technical concepts and trade-offs clearly to non-technical colleagues and customers.
• A practical approach to understanding requirements, questioning assumptions and resolving problems.
• Confidence working across disciplines and balancing coding responsibilities with delivery coordination.
• The initiative to work independently and the judgement to involve others when needed.
