About the Role

SQL Engineer

Hybrid | UK

We're working with a growing technology company that's looking to hire an experienced SQL Engineer to join its product development team.

This is a hands-on role focused on maintaining, optimising and evolving a large Azure SQL environment that sits at the heart of a business-critical software platform. You'll be joining a collaborative engineering team where you'll solve complex database performance issues, improve scalability and reliability, and play a key role in the ongoing development of a mature SQL estate.

If you enjoy analysing execution plans, tuning complex queries and solving challenging SQL performance problems, this is an excellent opportunity.

The role
  • Develop, enhance and maintain complex T-SQL stored procedures, functions and queries.
  • Investigate and resolve SQL performance issues using execution plans and performance analysis tools.
  • Optimise queries, indexing strategies and overall database performance.
  • Troubleshoot locking, blocking and other SQL Server performance issues.
  • Support database deployments across Development, Test and Production environments.
  • Collaborate with software engineers to deliver reliable, scalable database solutions.
  • Contribute to the ongoing improvement and modernisation of the Azure SQL platform.
What we're looking for
  • Strong commercial experience with SQL Server and Azure SQL Database.
  • Excellent T-SQL skills, including stored procedures, functions and complex queries.
  • Proven experience of SQL performance tuning and query optimisation.
  • Good understanding of SQL Server internals, indexing strategies and production troubleshooting.
  • Experience working within Agile development teams.
  • Strong communication skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
Nice to have
  • Query Store, DMVs or Extended Events.
  • Azure DevOps or CI/CD.
  • Redgate or other database deployment tools.
  • Experience supporting enterprise software or business-critical applications.
What's on offer?

This is an opportunity to join a growing technology business where SQL is central to the product. You'll have the chance to work on technically challenging problems, influence the performance and scalability of a mature Azure SQL environment, and be part of a collaborative team that's continually enhancing a widely used software platform.
